Shepherd Class Teacher – Mr Roger O’Keefe Shepherd has settled back to school very well this term and we are looking forward to an exciting term. We have county fair, a school disco, Mothers Day Stall and our trip to see the Gruffalo’s Child at the Riverside Theatre to look forward to this term. Most stationery is provided by the school. However, most students like to have their own textas and coloured pencils (these should be clearly labelled with your child’s name). It is also very helpful if each student has their own glue stick and scissors. A box of tissues and a roll of paper towel is a welcome donation to the class. Class timetable
English Reading The children will continue to work at their instructional level in groups aimed to increase their fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Literacy groups are from 9.00 – 10.00 every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and 10.00 – 11.00 every Tuesday. Any help during reading groups is welcome. As in term 1 the Premier’s Reading Challenge is a good opportunity to promote wide reading with students at home. Students in Year 2 can continue to select books from either the K-2 challenge or the 3-4 challenge. Parents are encouraged to read books to their children from the Premier’s Reading Challenge list. This can be accessed at https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html. The Jolly Phonics Grammar will continue in Year 2.
Writing The writing program will cover a variety of different genres. This term we are focusing on expositions, poetry and narratives. Handwriting Year 2 students will continue to write letters in the NSW foundation style and will consolidate the correct formation of letters and pencil grip.
Spelling We are continuing with the Spelling Mastery program this term.
Talking and Listening The talking and listening program aims to develop good listening skills and encourage all students to participate in discussions. Students have been given a “news” day and may have “special news” on a Friday. The whole school will be participating in a public speaking competition during week 5 (17th – 21st May). Children will need to prepare a short, 1 minute speech on a specific topic at home. Some students from each class will be selected to represent their class in the finals. A detailed note will be sent home shortly with topics for your child to choose from.
Library Our library day is Tuesday. Ms Imseih will teach the students about literature and research skills. Students should bring their library bag each Monday and be prepared to borrow. They will be encouraged to borrow books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
Mathematics Students will continue to develop their understanding of mathematics in the areas of number, space, measurement, data, patterns and algebra. The maths program we are using is Maths Tracks. This is an aid to the teaching of the mathematics syllabus and will be used in conjunction with a variety of practical, hands on activities to aid students understanding. In Year 2 this term we will be concentrating on numbers to 100. Students will be counting, ordering and representing whole numbers up to 100. They will also be learning to recognise both numbers and number words to 100 as well as addition and subtraction up to 100. In measurement the students will be learning to estimate, measure, compare and record lengths and distances using informal measurements, metres and centimetres.
COGS (Connected Outcome Groups) The cogs units cover the outcome in the Key Learning Areas of HSIE, Science, Personal Development and Health, and Creative Arts. In our COGS unit this term is we will explore how living things grow and change over time. This term we will be doing the Peer Support program. This aims to develop skills in resilience, assertiveness, decision making, problem solving and leadership. Peer support will commence Thursday of week 4. Sport and /PE
