Class Information

Homework - Homework is given out each Monday. Please ensure that your child completes it and returns it on Friday for marking (unless otherwise specified). There will be two pages from the Maths Tracks Homework book to complete, as well as an activity sheet that includes weekly sight words / sounds. Home readers will be sent out each week and your child should be reading for at least 15 minutes each night. Their home reading snake should be filled out and returned with their books on Friday. Every 5 minutes that your child reads, they can colour in that 5 minutes on the snake. After 1 hour of reading they will be given a sticker on the snake.

Library- Our library day is Wednesday. Ms Imseih will teach the students about literature and research skills. Students should bring their library bag each Wednesday and be prepared to borrow. They will be encouraged to borrow books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Sport and PE- Our PE lesson will be with Mrs Sprem every Friday morning. Sport will be on Friday afternoons. Children should wear their full sports uniform on Fridays.

Key Learning Areas Term 1

English

Reading - The children will be working at their instructional level in groups aimed to increase their fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Reading groups are from 9:00 - 10:00 am every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Any help during reading groups is welcome and greatly appreciated. If you are available during these times, please let me know by sending a note with your child.

Writing

The writing program will cover a variety of different genres. This term we are focusing on narratives and descriptive writing.

Handwriting

Year 1 will continue to write letters in the NSW Foundation Style and will consolidate the correct formation of letters and pencil grip.

Spelling

We are continuing with the Spelling Mastery program. All students have been placed at their appropriate level.

Jolly Phonics/Grammar

The Jolly Phonics program will be incorporated into our English program to further assist in the development of reading, writing and spelling skills. The Jolly Grammar Program is used in conjunction, to develop vocabulary and comprehension skills, whilst extending knowledge of phonics.

Talking and listening

The talking and listening program aims to develop good listening and communication skills, as well as encourage all students to participate in discussions. Students have been given a “News Day” which has a specific topic to cover each week. These notes were sent out during Week 1, and outlined these topics for the rest of Term 2.

Mathematics

Students will be developing their understanding of mathematics in the areas of number, space, measurement, data, patterns and algebra. The maths program we are using is Maths Tracks. This aids in teaching the Mathematics Syllabus and will be used in conjunction with a variety of practical, hands on activities to aid students’ understanding. The focus this term will be on the numbers 1-100. Students will be counting, ordering and representing whole numbers and groups of objects up to 100. They will also be learning to recognise both numbers and number words to 100, as well as doing addition and subtraction up to 100. 2D and 3D shapes in space and measurement will also be explored. Your children can log onto Mathletics and do activities that I will be setting for them later in the term.

COGS (Connected Outcome Groups)

Our COGS unit this term is called “Growing and Changing”. Students will be engaged in investigating growth of seedlings, observing and recording growth of animals e.g. a tadpole. There has been a project set for Bradley students and the information was sent home in Week 2 inside their blue homework folder. It is due in Week 7.

Extras

Bradley will be performing in assembly on Friday, Week 4. We will be doing a frog theme, which will tie into our COGS unit. The students need to wear green that Friday. If your child has a frog suit or you are willing to make or buy one that would be great. If not that is fine, as you can send your children to school in their green jumpers and green tracksuit pants. We are hoping to make a frog mask in class. You are welcome to come and watch the performance on the Friday. Your child needs to practise their lines for the assembly item. It would be good if they can learn these off by heart. Please help them with their expression and using loud voices.

As I mentioned before, there is a home project set and that is due in Week 7. It is important that your child does not leave this to the last minute to complete. A marking guide has been attached so you know how they will be marked.

Peer support will be starting in Week 4 on Thursdays and the children have all been placed in small groups.

We have teamed up with a Year 1/2 class at North Young Public School to be pen pals. This will be a great way for Bradley to learn about what it is like to go to school in a rural area.

If last term was anything to go by, I cannot wait to see the learning and exploration that will take place in

Term 2! If you wish to contact me, please ring the school office to organise a mutually convenient time.

With thanks,

Miss Emma Lambert
