Hamilton

Meadowbank classes have been named after notable people and places in Ryde’s early history.

Private John Patrick Hamilton.  Private Hamilton was posted to the 3rd Battalion and after training in Egypt took part in the landing on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, aged just 19.  Hamilton, together with several other men, was ordered out of the trenches onto the parapet in order to halt the enemy advance.  He lay in the open for 6 hours, for his ‘coolness and daring example’ he received the Victoria Cross.  He later served on the Western Front.  During the Second World War he again served, attaining the rank of Captain.
